Local and national policing teams have urged drivers to be 'Blue Light Aware' and have shared a video to help drivers respond correctly when encountering blue light vehicles on the roads.

A spokesperson for Lincolnshire Police said: "We understand that seeing blue lights and hearing sirens when you are driving can cause panic. All emergency service drivers are trained to the highest standard to ensure the safety of the public is paramount when they are on an urgent response.

PC Hood from Lincoln Response Investigation Team would like to give the following advice so you can best assist our officers when they are travelling to an incident on blue lights and sirens:

  • If an emergency services vehicle appears behind you on blue lights and sirens, remain calm, do not panic and move over to the left, if it is safe to do so.
  • Please avoid stopping on or just before bends or on approaching to the brow of a hill. Keep travelling until you have cleared the hazard, then pull over to the left if it is safe.
  • Do not go through red lights; you would not be expected to go through a red light and to put yourself and others in danger. You would also be committing an offence in doing so.
  • Avoid pulling into cycle or bus lanes as you would also be committing an offence in doing so.
  • Do not stop in the right-hand lanes of motorways or dual carriageways. Wait until it is safe then move over to the left lane.

This Blue Light Aware video goes into more depth about what to do when you see blue lights and sirens:

You can also get more information in the Highway Code.

A spokesperson for Lincolnshire Police said: "We really appreciate the vital role you play in helping emergency drivers get to where they need to be as safely as possible. You are helping us to save lives and to protect the community."
