Repairs to take place in Stamford's Red Lions Square
More work will take place in Red Lion Square soon.
Lincolnshire County Council will be carrying out "minor repairs" to Red Lion Square in Stamford mid-September.
Despite works on the cobbles in the square being completed less than a year ago, in October 2022, more works will be needed following tests, which found issues with the repairs.
The initial repairs cost £1.4 million and was commissioned by Lincolnshire County Council. Works took six months.
Red Lion Square in Stamford will once again be closed for up to 10 days while contractors carry out the work.
Karen Cassar, Assistant Director – Highways, said: "We always carry out tests to ensure newly-laid road surfacing, including stone setts, meets the high standards we expect.
"Unfortunately, some of the joints and bonding between the setts laid last year at Red Lion Square haven't met the stringent quality requirements we specified in our designs.
"As a result, our contractor will be repairing these sections of the square as part of our contract with them, at their own cost."
As part of the repairs, a combination of full road closures; southbound-only road closures; and suspended loading and parking bays will be in place as needed.
The road will be fully closed for up to 10 full days, including over the weekend. Pedestrian access to businesses and residents will be maintained at all times.
The diversion route for the road closures will be via Scotgate / A6121 North Street / A6121 East Street / Braze Nose Lane / A1175 St Leonards Street / A1175 Wharf Road / B1081 St Mary's Street / St John's Street, and vice versa.
Karen Cassar continued: "Repairing these defective joints now, at the contractor's expense, will not only save the council money and time in the future, but it will prevent further disruption down the line and ensure that Red Lion Square is durable enough to deal with the high levels of traffic it sees throughout the year.
"These works will inevitably cause some inconvenience, so I want to thank everyone in advance for bearing with us."
Work will begin on 11 September 2023.
