Rural residents have been asked to assist 'cast' sheep as lambing season gets into full swing.

It is strange but true that sheep can get stuck on their backs, a bit like tortoises. When this happens, the sheep is 'cast'.

This happens when they lay on their sides and then accidentally roll down a slope, or hole. Once on their backs they cannot right them selves and will die within 24 hours if not turned, as their stomach gasses build up.

It is particularly common when a sheep is carrying lambs, and makes it even more dangerous for the animal and her young.

If you happen to come across a sheep lying on its back with its legs up, local farmers have encouraged residents to help it back up by tipping or rolling it back over.

If a sheep remains like this, it will die, so please help by sharing and spreading the word.

You never know, it might save a life!
