Rutland-based Casterton College is set to receive £1.8 billion in funding from the School Rebuilding Programme.

Casterton College will now participate in and complete a range of surveys to find out how best to spend the money, but School Principal, Carl Smith, has suggested that the original school building, built in 1939, requires the most immediate attention.

Mr Smith was hopeful of receiving some grant funding following a long application process which began in the spring, with the support of Rutland and Melton Conservative MP, Alicia Kearns.

Rutland is one of thousands of schools and sixth form projects announced so far to get money as part of the scheme.

Gillian Keegan, Education Secretary said: "Education is a top priority for this Government. That is why, despite facing challenging economic circumstances, we are investing a record amount in our schools and colleges.

"The additional funding, alongside fantastic new facilities, will mean our brilliant teachers can get on with what they do best – and inspire the next generation."
