Coming up in Stamford on Saturday 18 March is the ever popular Stamford Record Fair.

with a rise in popularly in recent years, fairs such as these are cropping up more and more, but the record has a long and rich history dating back to the nineteenth century.

Records have been around for years, with Emile Berliner's 1890 invention of the gramophone and introduction of accompanying flat disk record, a descendant of Thomas Edison's phonograph.

In 1895, Berliner introduced flat, disks based in shellac, which dominated until the early 1950s.

It was in the 1930s when the long playing record was marketed and made commercially available, really boosting the popularity of 'vinyl'.

In more recent year, PVC records became more popular.

In the 1980s, the compact disk or CD, was brought to the market. An easier way of listening to more music, this dominated until music stream services were introduced, made infinitely more popular by Spotify in 2006.

However, records have become fashionable once more, with a rise in vintage fashion, recycling, and the resurrection of analog sound.

This resurgence has seen record fairs pop up across the country, where music lovers can buy unopened records dating back to the 1970s, brand new released, pre loved long play records and singles, as well as music paraphernalia, including record players, tees, cassettes, and more.

Stamford Record Fair is the place to browse for that rare, elusive album you've been looking for, to chat to like-minded people about music and more, and stay for a free coffee or tea and look at all the great records on offer from a range of friendly traders.

When you're done, head down to Ted Carroll 's new Rock On record shop at 4 All Saints Street to flick through masses of singles and LPs on his first weekend of opening, opens on Thursday 16th March. It all adds up to a great vinyl weekend for all lovers of records and music!

Alternatively, if you're around on Friday 17, Simon Ashley will be hosting his regular stall, The Record Stall, at Stamford's Friday Market, one of the most vibrant, diverse markets in the region.
