Gareth Davies MP has given his backing to a 'Beeching Reverse' project that aims to reconnect the communities of Kettering, Corby, Stamford and Peterborough back together with a green railway line.
This week, the Stamford MP met with the project’s board of directors, adding his support to that of Rutland MP Alicia Kearns, as previously reported by Nub News.
Mr Davies discussed the restoration of the historic Rugby and Stamford railway infrastructure through the Welland Valley Rail partnership and the boost to social connectivity in the local area provided by newer, faster and more efficient rolling stock and services.
According to the project leaders, most of the route is covered by existing freight lines, so there is only a small gap to fill in to enable speedy passenger services to flow between all the different communities.
Gareth said he was delighted that Welland Valley Rail’s ‘Access for All’ campaign will ensure that the southern platform of Stamford station is made more accessible for persons of reduced mobility.
The MP said: "Making Stamford’s beautiful and historic station simpler to use will bring benefits to many of our residents whether it's the elderly or parents with young children in push-chairs. With the project's plan to create a twice-per-hour train service, this will bring flexibility and efficiency and vastly improve passengers’ travel experience from Stamford station.”
Mr Davies says the Government’s strategy for reaching its 2030 sustainability target relies on the Prime Minister’s 10 point plan for a green industrial revolution, which will not only help the environment but support our economic recovery.
The Welland Valley Rail proposal promises significant strides towards cutting emissions across the Grantham and Stamford constituency, driving interest in our local businesses and reducing congestion on the roads, he added.
