A Stamford-based food hub have been donating waste food to local farms and an exotic pet charity.
In January 2022, a local charity worker, George, moved on from the highly successful Second-Helpings, Stamford needing to work in a new direction.
Founded by George 9 years ago, the project had fed in the region of 75,000 people, collected and distributed 235,000kg of food, and saved 200kg of co2 each year.
Now, he has set up George's Food Hub.
The team work with members of the local community to collect and distribute excess food from local business and shops to support those in need in the local area and reduce food waste.
George's Food Hub delivers food to three Peterborough projects which are working to feed in the region of 700 people in need each week, including many who are homeless. Food is collected from four suppliers in the area, who donate a wide range of food items enabling folk to obtain good wholesome food.
When they have left overs that go uncollected by the local community, they also reach out to support local farms, farmers and even an exotic pet charity based in the local area.
The team explained: "We often get asked, what do we do if we can't get rid of food. It's rare it happens but it does occasionally.
"The Riverford Farm stock goes into a specific bin that we take back to Riverford for them to compost. We also donate to chicken farms.
"Last Wednesday we went to Exotic Pet Refuge and delivered some bananas and a box of bread. So we're not just feeding people, we're helping animals too!"
On top of this, in early July, a member of the team shaved her hair off to raise money for the local food charity.
