Warning to parents as Easter eggs hit the shelves
Parents are being warned to take care when giving their children solid chocolate eggs this Easter, as the popular chocolate gifts hit the shelves.
Similar in size and shape to grapes, solid chocolate eggs pose a choking risk to children. They are just the 'right' size to block a child's windpipe if eaten whole, but are much harder to bite in half than a grape!
A packet of Mini Eggs, for example, says that the chocolate should not be consumed by a child under the age of 4, but they are popular Easter snacks and are often used to make Easter Nests, sweet treats made with chocolate, Shredded Wheat and Mini Eggs to give the impression of a bird nest.
Millie's Trust - a charity created by the parents of Millie Thompson who tragically passed away in a choking incident in October 2012 - have shared a warning about the hazards of solid chocolate eggs.
They said: "In the run up to Easter, a friendly reminder that Mini Eggs are the same size as a young child's airway. They pose a choking risk for children under the age of 4.
"If you're concerned and have a baby under 12 months, our Family First Aid courses are FREE. Visit the Millie's Trust website for more information or to book on a course."
Take care this Easter and enjoy your sweets, treats and goodies responsibly!
